At 9:22 on a Saturday morning, November 12, 2022, Tangipahoa Parish deputies booked Sedrick Elzey, a 41-year-old Hammond man, as a “person of interest” after officers found the man’s girlfriend and her teenage daughter shot to death inside their home.

Some murders bring empathy, others do not

Throughout September, two deaths mesmerized our media. Following long periods of waiting and wondering, this week law enforcement officials issued an arrest warrant for Brian Laundrie and confirmed that the DNA in the belly of a 12-foot alligator belonged to Timothy Satterlee of Slidell.

Unsolved murders need not remain that way

Two contrasting events occurred last week. A mother made a public plea to the residents of South Louisiana for help exposing the person or person who killed her son in March 2021—while in Central Louisiana, a former Livingston Parish sheriff’s deputy rallied the public to help police resolve the murder of a teenage girl from 2004.

Has reward hindered Alvarez murder investigation?

In February 2021, the Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s Office again asked the public for information regarding the unsolved homicides that claimed the lives of 63-year-old Mary Alvarez, 42-year-old Daytra Miller, and 13-year-old Robert West, Jr. In each murder case, the sheriff’s office increased rewards for information to $25,000. Bayou Justice explored the murders of Daytra Miller and her son, Robert, twice since the horrific event, but not the Alvarez case. Unfortunately, the original reward offered in that case may be responsible for that oversight.
