Interstate shootings, history repeating itself
Between June 2020 and October 2022, interstate highways inside New Orleans hosted an average of two random shootings per month. However, the 2022 total exceeded this average, reaching 30 freeway shootings last year. Two months into 2023, with eight shootings on Interstate 10, the average number of interstate shootings has tripled.
New Orleans Interstate shootings return in force
Now that other state and national media have reported on the repeat shootings on Interstate 10, readers write weekly asking for an update from my perspective. Generally, I’ve felt my job complete. Other news outlets have finally taken notice. Even with a two-month break in the shootings this year, the monthly average of two interstate shootings per month exceeds the 2021 and 2020 averages.

Today, every news outlet in the state reports nightly on the attacks, making the highways around Crescent City a shooting gallery. In July, I reported on several potentially related shootings on two New Orleans interstate highways. Three months later, the shootings continue, now listing a honeymoon couple and an off-duty police officer among the victims.
