Mercy Hospital killer unidentified 66 years later
On a Saturday night, just after nine, April 16, 1955, a man in a Panama hat stepped into a room on the cardiac ward of Mercy Hospital in New Orleans. Inside, he silently crushed a dozing patient’s head with a blunt instrument. Running into the room, Jennie found her husband wheezing, his head bleeding and misshapen. He died five days later.
DA’s Cold Case Unit to revisit Sibille case, others
Last week, we recapped the unsolved 1974 murder of a 19-year-old Jefferson Downs thoroughbred jockey named James Robert Sibille. This is one of the many cold case files Bayou Justice has revisited from the New Orleans area, and this week, we share more related to Sibille’s death. However, I want to first take a moment to suggest that New Orleans District Attorney Jason Williams may have taken notice of our efforts. Wednesday, a news release from his office announced the formation of a new Cold Case Unit to “get murderers off the streets and bring healing to families.”
Serial shooter targeting New Orleans highways?
Thursday night, July 1, 2021, at 7:48, a 911 call alerted the New Orleans Police Department to another interstate highway shooting. Someone shot a man driving in a westbound lane on I-610 near Paris Avenue. Emergency Medical Services transported the victim to a hospital in critical condition. Officials released no additional details from the shootings, no description of the sniper or sniper vehicle, and no likely motives, nor have they confirmed connections between the shootings.

On August 22, two days after NOPD released the notice, Jessica’s sisters, Amanda and Audra, arrived in New Orleans with their cousin Doug. Before meeting with detectives, Doug suggested checking the Lakeview neighborhood near Jessica’s home to consider how they might organize a search party. Two blocks from Jessica’s apartment, near Kenilworth and Orleans, riding with car windows down, they noticed a foul smell, and stopping at the park, they found Jessica’s body, lying in the grass, and decaying in the sun.
