After reading last week’s Bayou Justice column on Louisiana State University student Allison Rice’s murder, a retired Baton Rouge police officer contacted me with a theory. He suggested the “carjackers” described by the Baton Rouge Police Department destroyed Allison’s SUV because they had no interest in the vehicle. The attackers, he believes, planned to abduct Allison and only killed her when she attempted to escape.
Justice at last in Selonia Smith Reed case
On January 11, 2023, the 21st Judicial Court will sentence Reginald Lathan Reed to a mandatory minimum sentence of life in prison. A jury unanimously returned his guilty verdict at 7:30 on a Friday night after deliberating only four hours on November 18.

Amite murder, rape predated Hotard-Moate events
Lillie Ford told police her attacker raped her in the woods before running away with her purse. Afterward, the woman returned to the car, pushed the driver to one side, and drove to Shorse’s Medical Clinic in Amite. She arrived at the clinic just before two that morning and phoned the Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s Office. Her companion died on the road.
